The Prime Minister is appointed by the President from among elected members of the National Assembly, and he is the principal assistant of the President in the discharge of his functions, and Leader of Government Business in the National Assembly. The Prime Minister also holds the office of Vice President who has precedence over any other Vice President.
Following the May elections, Honourable Moses Verasammy Nagamootoo was appointed Prime Minister and First Vice-President by President David Granger on 20 May 2015.
Prime Minister Nagamootoo has portfolio responsibilities for public information, broadcasting, government business in the National Assembly, constitutional reform, and domestic affairs. He is also a member of the National Security Committee and the National Defence Board, and is Chairman of the Business and the Parliamentary Affairs Sub-committees of Cabinet.
The previous holders of the Office of the Prime Minister of Guyana were Mr. L.F.S. Burnham, Mr. Ptolemy Reid, Mr. Hugh Desmond Hoyte, Mr. Hamilton Green, Mrs. Janet Jagan, and Mr. Samuel Hinds.
Office of the Prime Minister has Regional Representatives in Regions Two, Three, Six and Ten who manages Issues, Complaints and Concerns from the general public. This is a mechanism to serve the electorate who expects that their government will address the socio-economic needs in their communities – roads, drainage, bridges, burial grounds, etc.
