BIOGRAPHICAL DATA MRS. SITA NAGAMOOTOO - TTC; B.Ed., Dip.Ed
Wife of the Prime Minister and First Vice-President of Guyana
A former teacher, headmistress and lecturer, Mrs Sita Nagamootoo served in the Education sector for over forty (40) years. She graduated from the Liilian Dewar College of Education for Secondary Teachers (Mathematics major), then proceeded to the University of Guyana where she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Language major), and a post-graduate Diploma in Education Administration.
She also successfully completed courses at the Guyana National Service and the Kuru Kuru Cooperative College. During her career as an educationist, Mrs. Nagamootoo held several senior positions, including Principal of the Alleyne High School, Lecturer at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), CXC marker in English Language and examiner for national primary and secondary examinations.
She served on the Literacy and Cultural Committee, Ministry of Education; Board of Directors of Cyril Potter College of Education; and the Board of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. Mrs. Nagamootoo is currently a member of the Council of the Guyana Women’s Leadership Institute. Mrs. Nagamootoo has also held membership in the Women’s Progressive Organisation and the People’s Progressive Party (1975- 2011). In 2011 she joined the Alliance for Change.
Mrs. Nagamootoo holds no full-time, Government post but serves voluntarily as the secretary of a family charitable foundation. She is the mother of four adult children and grandma of five boys. Born at Fyrish, Corentyne, she is married since May 23, 1971, to her fellow Berbician, Moses V. Nagamootoo, with whom she attended the same primary school. Since their marriage, Sita has been a partner with her husband in political struggles for democracy, women empowerment and social change.
